Here, locals buy fresh flowers, meat and produce at the renowned Monterey Market as well as a variety of specialty shops. For extended shopping, head north on Monterey to Solano Avenue. With Albany so close nearby, you have easy access to a variety of restaurants as well as grocery and boutique shops.
The Northbrae neighborhoodexudes a strong community feel. In addition to the extensive markets, locals take advantage of the recreational areas, from Cedar Rose Parks to the Ohlone Greenway which links several East Bay communities with its bike and pedestrian trail. You’ll find that most residents prefer to walk to their shopping errands. For extended trips, however, there is ample AC Transit between the El Cerrito and Downtown Berkeley BART stations. In addition, #18 takes you from the top of Hopkins to Albany’s vibrant commercial district.

Schools in the Northbraeneighborhood include several pre-schools, Jefferson Elementary, MLK Jr. Middle School, which runs adjacent to the aforementioned park north of the market area; King Junior High, St. Mary’s College High School Prep, and The Crowden Music School for grades four through eight, offering a unique curriculum for serious students of music.
