While the San Francisco East Bay has many special shopping destinations, Berkeley’s Fourth St . stands out as one of the most unique. It offers a wonderful combination of retail businesses that can only be found in one place… Berkeley! Where else are you going to find boutique independent shops just a few doors down from an Apple Store?

During the Holidays, strings of multi colored lights and snowflake pendants adorn the strip. On warm afternoons and evenings throughout the year you can enjoy outdoor dining at any one of its several terrific restaurants. If you just want some cheep-eats options, stop into Betty’s Diner for a slice of pizza or a selection from their Deli counter. Or better yet, a fresh slice of berry pie alamode. Take a chair at Café Rouge and relax into a glass of white wine, some fresh oysters and some of their delicious shoestring fries.

Living in and around Berkeley’s Fourth St . offers an eclectic array of urban chic loft style homes with the outlying streets offering small to mid sized single-family homes. Living here affords its residents the option of ditching their cars and getting around quickly on the many bike-friendly “bikers boulevard” streets or catching a train from the North Berkeley Bart station. Just over the University Ave./Hwy 80 Bridge you’ll find yourself exploring the Berkeley Marina, Cesar Chavez Park and the adjacent Nature Reserve.

Head east up University Ave. and you’re in the heart of Downtown Berkeley. One of my favorite evening excursions is to have dinner on Shattuck Ave. before taking in one of the many award winning plays at The Aurora or Berkeley Rep theaters.
